Cinque Terre

Formerly accessible only by sea or by mule tracks, this string of five fishing villages still keeps nowadays its ancient character: miles of hand-built dry stone walls supporting terraced vineyards and groves of lemon, orange and olive trees witnessing centuries of hard labour involved in shaping this fascinating landscape. We will walk on ancient footpaths running along cliffs falling sheer to the blue waters below and we will enjoy strolling through pastel-coloured houses lined on narrow alleyways.

Itinerary

Day 1
Meeting at noon at our hotel in Monterosso, we will have a welcome drink with focaccia tasting in a local taverna before setting off for our first walk up to Madonna di Soviore, one of the most ancient sanctuaries in the region, dating back to Early Middle Ages. (3 hours)

Day 2
Along the coast trail, the last stretch of which is the renowned "Via dell'Amore" *, we will hike to Riomaggiore, passing through the picturesque villages of Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola on our way. Return to Monterosso by train.
(5 hours)

* When the coastal pathway between Corniglia and Riomaggiore is still closed, we will take a higher route for the second part of the itinerary.

Day 3
A first steep ascent on large stone steps will lead us up to Punta Mesco and to the ruins of Sant'Antonio, with great views of the Cinque Terre. Proceeding through pinewoods and Mediterranean bush, we will finally arrive to the charming village of Levanto. (2 ½ hours)
Free afternoon and return to Monterosso by train or optional walk back by an alternative route.

Day 4
Our today's walk starts from Riomaggiore, reachable by train in few minutes. Winding beside terraced vineyards, our trail will climb to the ridge of the promontory and take us through a shady forest before scenically descending into Portovenere. Return to Monterosso by boat.
(6 hours)

Day 5
The trip ends after breakfast.
